Medfield School Committee advances $221,000 free-cash plan for K-5 literacy as override vote looms. State Sen. Rebecca Rausch and Reps.
Josh Tarsky and Marcus Vaughn spent over an hour with the committee on cell phone bills, special education costs and Proposition 2 1/2 pressures, with Rausch saying she's "unaware of any proposals on Beacon Hill" to change the tax cap. Superintendent Jeffrey Marsden warned a 1.8 percent budget increase, without a successful override, would push elementary classes to 26 students and cut high school electives and AP courses. The district must close a $1.2 million reduction gap, with an override amount expected by early April and a possible June 8 ballot vote following May 4 Town Meeting.
The committee also unanimously approved its consent agenda, 4-0, with Vice Chair Diana Frascella absent for that portion.
