Select Board OKs Menorah, Baxter Park Policy

Select Board · Meeting of September 8, 2026

Medfield backs a Baxter Park menorah and opens a debate over holiday displays. The Select Board voted unanimously to allow Deborah Herwitz's group to install an electric menorah at Baxter Park during Hanukkah, December 5 to 12, while member Gus Murby pushed draft guidelines making MEMO the "principal coordinator" of holiday displays there, requiring a sponsoring organization and year-to-year permission. Town Counsel Mark Sorrell cited a 1989 Supreme Court ruling backing the town's legal footing.

"Peace on earth and goodwill to all," Murby said of his proposed standard. The board also designated Medfield an official Purple Heart Community, approved a $212,537 Green Communities energy contract for the high school, and authorized an emergency three-year, $28,452.32-a-year tax software contract with Vaydar Systems after 26-year vendor Patriot Properties announced it was discontinuing support.
