Medfield Warrant Committee narrowed its FY2027 budget override scenarios from six to two on Tuesday. Chair Stephen Callahan presented a deliberation framework emphasizing stewardship and long-term sustainability, and the Committee rejected both the Superintendent's full 5.0 percent school level-service request and the minimal 2.5 percent across-the-board scenario, instead focusing on either 3.9 percent school growth with 2.8 percent town growth or 3.5 percent school with 2.6 percent town growth. Members cited concerns that the full level-service scenario would produce nearly a $1,200 annual tax increase on the average home while providing insufficient reason to depart from the Superintendent's 3.9 percent recommendation, which requires only modest cuts in retirements, professional development, and central office staff.
The Committee will present both scenarios to a municipal working group on March 17 and plans a final override recommendation vote on March 24, with the intent to include a joint commitment statement from the School Committee, Select Board, and Warrant Committee pledging budget growth discipline for FY2028.
